Born in Kingston and raised in August Town, Sizzla was brought up as a strict Rastafarian, and studied mechanical engineering in his youth. Whilst growing up amongst the boom of Dancehall, Sizzla decided that music would be a tool to spread Rastafarian teachings and the idea of spirituality in Jamaica. His lyrics often touch on this, with songs centering on the topics of drug abuse and disfranchising of black youth.
